VALEDICTORY

MRS AMD MRS E. VEALE. FAREWELLED AT CAMBRIDGE. The supper-room of the Cambridge Town Hall was well-filled on Friday afternoon, when the many friends ok Mr and Mrs E. Veale, from town and country districts, gathered to bid them farewell prior to their departure from Cambridge to take up residence at Tauranga. . Mr Veale has been a resident of Cambridge for many years, and is widely-known and highly esteemed by everyone. Throughout the period of residence in Cambridge lie was taken an active interest in public affairs, and has organised many functions in aid of worthy objects. For the past 12 months Mr Veale’s health has not been good, and acting upon medical advice lie is going to a part where the winters are not quite so cold as in Cambridge. Mrs W. G. Care (Deputy-Mayoress) acted as hostess and presided over a dainty afternoon tea, which was handed round. Mr W. G. Care (Deputy-Mayor) expressed to Mr and Mrs Veale the sincere regret of the people of Cambridge and surrounding districts at their departure. Mr Care mentioned the many special efforts made to raise funds of which Mr Veale was ot the head. He had done great organisation work during the war, and had also been at the head of the Queen Carnivals for the band instruments and the Plunket Rooms. Mr Veale was the first Waikato Central Show secretary, and under his able guidance the show had been successfully run for many years. Mr Care said they could not let their old friend leave without showing their appreciation of his long and faithful citizenship. Mr Veale was then handed a substantial cheque by Mr Care. In returning thanks, Mr V.eale said he was overwhelmed at such a reception, and was pleased to see so many of his old friends present and also a good many new ones. While there were 'not many who could do the big things in life, a good many did the small things, and he had endeavoured to do some of the small things which came his way, to the best of his ability. He was sad at leaving Cambridge, where he had been for HO years. To-day’s gathering would always remain in his memory. Mrs Care presented Mrs Veale with a lovely bouquet. All present then joined in singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,’’ followed by “Auld Lang Syne.’’
