Garden Fete. A very large number attended the garden fete held at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. S. Dickey in aid of the new Presbyterian Church at Walton, visitors being present from all of the ’surrounding districts. The picturesque gardens and spacious lawns were greatly admired by all in attendance. During the afternoon many forms of entertainment and competition were provided, the following being the results:—Triyl croquet, Mrs R. W. Burns; target croquet, Mrs K. Findlater; clock croquet, Mrs K. Findlater; tennis, Yankee tournament, ladies, Miss Salmon, men, Mr D. K. Porter; clock golf, ladies, Mrs Living-stoni, men, Mr D. K. Porter; weight guessing (■cake), Mi3s E. McLean; chain stepping, Mr J. Dickey. Good business was dons at the following stalls: —Afternoon tea, Mesdames Diprose, Dickey, and Wilson and Miss Patty Bryce; bring and buy, Mrs Melrose and Mr Orr. At the conclusion of the afternoon’s entertainment the awards were presented to the winners by Rev. Hampton. Mr W. McLean extended 1 the thanks of the Walton Presbytery to Mr and Mrs Dickey for their generosity in assisting them. Sunday School Picnic. The annual picnic of pupils of the Anglican Sunday school took place at Mr Chapman’s farm, in glorious weather, a large, number of parents attending in addition to the young folks, who competed in races and like events.

During the afternoon the following' special prizes were presented by Rev. Turner: —Scripture knowledge, over 12 years—Girls, Betty Clow; boys, Fred. Munro; under 12 years, girls, Margaret Forbes; boys, Jack Boone; most regular attendance, over 12 years, girls, Olive Cresswell; boys, George Hill; under I'2 years, girls, Doris Dunlop; beys, Noel Farley; juniors, girls, Vera Walton; boys, Cecil Marshall. Croquet Club. The members of the local ladles’ croquet club recently received a visit from the Hinuera Club. The result of the matches was in favour of the visitors, the Hinuera representatives winning by 3 games to 1. Cycle Road Racing. Another road race was conducted by the recently formed Cycle Club, the oourse in this instance being to Tirau and back, a distance approximating 34 miles, which proved a thorough lest to the competitors. Nine riders started in the race. A close Anlsh was witnessed between the two limit riders, A. R. Barker and the veteran A. Lewis, the former gaining the advantage in the last 100 yards, _ to complete the distance in lh. 33m- 50s. Within a' few minutes three riders crossed the Anishing line in close order, A. Pllkington, of Te Aroha being awarded third position. Another rider actually registered the fastest time in the race, but was proved to have accepted -pace from a motor vehicle during the progress of the contest, and the winner, A. R. Barker, was thereon declared to have also secured the special trophy donated for that’ honour. - The previous races conducted oy the club have been contested over metal and sealed roads, but it has now been decided by the executive to restrict the courses to sealed roads for some time, and until the metalled roads are in smooth condition and suitable for fast travel. A numbea of mishaps have befallen members of the club of late while training upon the rougher roads, and it is deemed advisable to avoid these in the meantime.
