KAWHIA.

Minister’s Visit. The visit of Hon. Sir A. T. Ngata, coming as it did at the same -time as the sitting of the Native Land Court, drew a crowd of Maoris into Kawhia. reminiscent of the early days when the Maori population far outnumbered that of the whites. They are already making preparation for the annual visit of King Te Rata, which takes place in March, and will again draw a large gathering, as it is for the Maoris the event of the year.

School Picnic. The annual school picnic was held at Puhl on Friday last, quite a number "of parents and friends being present. The place is an ideal one for a picnic, providing as it does room for running and swimming races and diving contests, all of which were keenly contested by the different standards. A feature of this year’s picnic was the hangi, in the preparing of which the Maoris ably . assisted. Everything passed off satisfactorily, due in a great measure to the head teacher— Mrs Duckering—who was untiring in her efforts to give the children a good time. Fishing. There has not been the same amount of outside Ashing this season, but one party who went out to Gannet Islandlately got a Ane catch of tiapuka and king Ash. Sunday School. After the service on Sunday evening the prizes donated by Mrs W. Scott and Mrs Braine were presented by tiie vicar, Rev. Alexander, after which the superintendent, Mr Alain, gave a report on the year’s work, and emphasised the duty parents owe their children lo see that they have the heneilt of religious instruction, pointing out that, apart from any other benefits, a child who has received religious instruction is better equipped and more Akely to make a success of its after life than a child whose education on this subject has been neglected. Kawhia is fortunate indeed in having one who takes such an interest in the boys and girls.
