PRICE OF WHEAT.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In a report in 'the Times of the sth inst. it is stated that a shipment of 4000 tons of wheat is 'being shipped abroad with several other shipments to follow. It appears to me that this wheat is being sent out of the country to be sold at about half the price we are paying for fowl wheat to avoid lowering prices here. It is a crying scandal that the wheat-grower is placed in a position to do this by Parliament. The public of New Zealand have to pay nearly 100 per cent, more for their bread than the consumers in Britain. The poultry-farmers have to pay fancy prices for their grain, from 8s 6d to 9s Gd a bushel. Bran and pollard are correspondingly dear, which affects the dairy farmers. Then when there is a surplus it is sent out of the country to avoid lowering the price, and so the wheat-grower bites the hand that feeds him. It is high time the wheat industry was ‘put on the same basis as every other primary industry.—l am, etc., R. G. YOUNG. Gordonton, Oct. 10.
