TO WHOM HONOUR IS DUE
After the earnest and whole-hearted appreciations of retiring leaders of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company that were uttered at the annual meeting to-day, little remains for us to add. One thought may perhaps be stressed: Not only unselflsh devotion and courage, but magnanimity in a marked degree is required in those who are called upon to guide a great organisation through difficult times. Criticism of policy is sure to be severe at such times, and it is all too easy for disputes of policy to descend into personal quarrels. The ability to accept criticism with good grace, always to give opponents credit for good motives, is somewhat Dr. Bertran, of Rotorua, was in more needed among those entrusted with the leadership of a great cooperative concern. Lacking it, men could hardly hope to continue their work; possessing it, they can go forward calmly, meeting every danger and difficulty as it comes. This magnanimity, united with a thorough belief in co-operation, has greatly helped Messrs. Barugh and Hawkins to bring the company to its present proud position. May they live to enjoy the esteem and affection in which they are held by thousands of fellow-citizens.
