MR MacDONALD’S MISSION
S Mr Ramsay MacDonald has accom- ' plished his mission of peace and dei iivered the message of British good- : will to the Government and people of : !he United States, and after a few j days in New York will, return to Eng- ! land. The importance of this mission j is beyond calculation. Not only will : I he personal contact between the Prime ; Minister and President respectively of j the two great English-speaking nations i have done much to clarify the inter- ! national atmosphere and thus brought | the object of the visit—the mainten- ; ance of world peace—appreciably j nearer, but it will have important rei suits in many other ways, directly and indirectly. The personal element means so much in national as in individual relations. Mr MacDonald has made an excellent impression upon the ! people of the United States, and this j will do much to bring about a better 1 understanding between the two naj dons. His conferences with Mr | Hoover, too, have been very fruitful; : indeed, he said that in them he had I achieved more than he had uoped to j do. This is very gratifying, and will raise the hope that the spirit of peace animating the leaders of Great Britain and the United States will spread in an ever-widening circle until it permeates , every nation. if that is so, the flve-
powers conference to be held later will have the result hoped for—the limitation of armaments and the assurance of world peace—and Mr MacDonald will have done a great work not only for the country of which he is Prime Minister but for humanity.
