HEAVY SENTENCES

ON YOUNG BURGLARS. I . CHIEF JUSTICE'S COMMENTS. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. “ A dangerous young gang of criminals," was the description given by Chief Justice Myers, in sentencing a number of youths for breaking and entering by night and theft, breaking ’and entering with intent to commit a crime, and receiving stolen goods. James Mullally, aged 22, for breaking, entering and theft (two charges), had been sentenced at New Plymouth to three years’ reformative detention. He had his sentence increased to five years. William Claude White (21), for breaking, entering, theft and receiving, was similarly treated. Samuel Patrick White (19), for breaking, entering and theft (three charges), Leonard Michael White (17), for like offences, and John Mullally (19), for breaking, entering and theft (five charges) and breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, were sentenced to live years’ Borstal, with a recommendation to the authorities that they should be kept in separate institutions, if possible, to break up I heir association. Charles Edward King (20), for breaking, entering and theft was placed on probation for two years. His Honour said King might have been led to the offence by the idea that the others were heroes, but they were not; they were criminals, and criminals of a bad type.

OTHER PRISONERS SENTENCED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Clarence Moore, carrier, aged 29, who pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit rape, was ordered three years’ reformative detention. Philip John Martin, labourer (38), attempted breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime and being found by night in possession of housebreaking instruments, 12 months’ reformative detention. Albert James Self (35), breaking, entering and theft, 12 months’ reformative detention.
