GOLF IN VICTORIA.
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. MORPETH IN SEMI-FINAL. CHANCES HIGHLY REGARDED. (Australian Press Association.) '©& MELBOURNE, August 6. Play in the Victorian amateur golf championship was continued to-day on the Commonwealth links by match play over 36 holes. The weather was fine.
The semi-finalists are Sloan Morpeth, L. Nettlefold (Australian champion), M. Ryan, and A. Hancock. Morpeth’s chances are highly regarded, in spite of the calibre of Nettiefold and Ryan, who are in great form. Morpeth to-day had an even tussle with Fawcett. They were all square at the end of the first nine holes, for which each took 39. Coming home Fawcett had chances to win at the 17th. and 18lh. holes, but failed to sink 4ft. putts. Morpeth came home in 40, to Fawcett’s 39, and was 2 up. Morpeth’s score was 79 and Fawcett’s 78 for the round. In the afternoon Morpeth won at the 37th. hole. Hancock defeated Bulte at the 39th. hole. They were all square at the end of the first 18 holes.
Nettlefold defeated Fowler by 6 up and 5 to play, after being 1 up at the end of the first round.
Ryan defeated Ivo Whitton by 4 up and 3 to play. Ryan was 3 up at the end of the first 18 holes.
