After the Show we will see what the position is. “I asked the question because I would like to know if the Council intends to take advantage of the £1 for £1 subsidy on unemployed relief works recently offered by the Prime Minister.

His Worship replied that the Council would undoubtedly take advantage of the subsidy later on if it was necessary.

It was decided that the Works Committee report, with power to-act in urgent cases meanwhile, and employ only married men with at least three months’ residential qualifications and who have registered with the Labour Department lie considered. Returned Soldiers’ Request.

The Waikato Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote asking the Council if it was prepared to subsidise the payment of £75 from the association, the money to be used for the relief of unemployment among returned soldiers in the same way as the Poppy Day funds had been used in previous years.

On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to reply that the Couhcil would subsidise the amount provided the programme of works for ex-soldiers be submitted to the Council.
