CHILD WELFARE

RECOMMENDATION BY WOMEN. SEPARATION FROM DEPARTMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Wednesday. A remit submitted to the conference of the National Council of Women this morning urged that the Child Welfare branch of the Education Department be separated from the Education Department, and a distinct public welfare department, embraping child welfare, charitable aid, and pensions, family endowment, etc., be created. After discussion, wherein the difficulty of rearranging the departments was emphasised by the Auckland delegates, the proposal was withdrawn, and a resolution was passed merely expressing the opinion that it was in the interests of the Dominion to have flic child welfare work separate from the Education Department and made a distinct department.
