MEETING OF PROTEST. ,ARE AUTHORITIES NEGLECTFUL? RATE OF PAY CRITICISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Dissatisfaction with the dilatory manner in which the authorities are tackling the problem of relief works was expressed at a crowded meeting of unemployed workers in the Trades Hall ‘this morning. Mr McKeen, M.P., expressed greater dissatisfaction with City Council’s activities than with those of the Government, because the Mayor, knowing definitely that Hie Government was prepared to subsidise on the same basis as last year, had done nothing. Air R. Semple condemned the attitude of the Premier as dictatorial. How, he asked, could a man keep his dependants on casual labour at 12s a day, making allowances for medical and other expenses? Mr P. Fraser, ALP., referring to the appeal for subscriptions for the Dominion Aluseum and Art Gallery, said llesli and blood should come before the bcaulificaticyn of the city. It was stated that a large body of men proposed to turn out, and if they were not allotted a place in the procession they would follow behind it, carrying banners showing skeletons and skulls as symbols > that they were on the verge of starvation.
