Mr Campbell Johnstone was reelected chairman of. the Raglan County Council at Ngaruawahia to-day. He has held the office continuously" since 1910. WAIKATO. The annual meeting of the Waikato County Council to-day unanimously •"re-elected Mr. W. Newell as chairman for the ensuing 12 months. Each member voiced his appreciation of Mr. Newell's services during the time he had occupied the chair, and on the motion of Crs. Smith and Hinton, an honorarium of £IOO was voted to him. Mr. Newell suitably responded, and paid a tribute to the efficiency of the staff and the amicable relations which had existed generally throughout the council, despite unavoidable differences pf opinion. He felt that a honorarium, of £IOO was too much for him to accept at the present time, and he'asked the mover and seconder of the motion to cut the amount in half. Cr. Smith, whilst unwilling to oppose the chairman, could accept no compromise. He was sure the chairman would still be out of pocket despite the honorarium of £IOO, and the vote passed should be allowed to stand. Other councillors expressed themselves as quite in accord with Cr. Smith's view and the vote as passed was allowed to remain.
