£ — ' lAN HAMILTON AND PEACE. WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. LONDON, October 1. "Tbcre must be something wrong with the scheme of existence when a State, whenever it is disturbed, devours -its own children," said General Sir lan Hamilton, in urging the need for peace, at the opening of a sports pavilion at Glasgow. The latter was erected in memory of 'SOO high school boys who were killed in war. "On hard-fought fields, when fortunes are sinking and rising," continued Sir lan. "a commander's mind inevitably turns to the lost legions. Lord French must have often longed for the Mons 'contemptibles.' How often in my own agony and suspense have I calied up from the dead the beautiful '29th Division, standing intact on parade at Alexandra. With that division at the critical moment the campaign might have been won within an hour."
