OPENLY RUDE.
CITY COUNCIL CAHNERS. WOMAN’S AMAZEMENT. Mrs Mildred Handley, a newlyelected councillor of Romsey Shire, has had a look at the Sydney City Council at work. She declares that the utter lack of decorum was a revelation. Mrs Handley attended the Sydney Council at the invitation of the Lord Mayor, and sat at his right hand, while the aldermen debated thefaffairs of a great city. “Men say that women are incapable of conducting a formal meeting,” she said, “but I cannot, conceive any women’s" meeting beinc conducted with less dignity than that of the Sydney City Council. Aldermen were openly rude to each other, yawned, stretched and talked loudly to each other instead of listening io those attempting to make formal speeches, and generally behaved disgracefully. “The Mayor showed inflinite tact and patience, for at times the atmosphere was tense. Those aldermen should go to a meeting conducted by women for a few lessons in deportment and decorum.”
