FURTHER DISTURBANCE.

ALARM AT WEIHJiIWEI.

A naval wireless message from Weihaiwei, the British port on the north coast of the Shantung Province, says the officer who administers the government of tiie port has sent an urgent request for the despatch of naval reinforcements. He says he has received alarming reports of threatened disturbances.

At Chinkiang, 50 miles east of Nanking, a naval action is in. progress between Northern and Southern warships. Two of the latter shelled the north bank of the Yargtsc-kiang River. The British warship Carlisle ha?, gone to Weihaiwci as a result of a Consular report that trouble is expected there from bandits. There are indications of growing opposition to the extremist policy. A demonstration was recently held at Foochow, in the southern province of Fukien, in which 300,000 people took part. They acclaimed a moderate policy. A colonel who addressed the crowd in favour of Red (extreme action was mobbed, shot, and thrown into the river.

The Japanese General Staff has decided to send five companies of regular troops to the Tientsin-Peking area, to supplement the three Japanese companies which arc already (here.

Four destroyers have left Amizurn for Port Arthur. The light cruisers Kinu and Yura are patrolling the coast of Shantung, off Chofoo, 75 miles north-west of Weihaiwci.
