A grave situation haa resulted filom the abrogation of the China-Belgian Treaty by China, which foreign diplomats regard as the most Important international event In China for many years. • The relations of the two countries are strained as the result of the Belgians' definite rejection of Peking's proposals In a new agreement, whloh demanded Chinese jurisdiction over Belgians against the finding of the recent International Extra-territory Commission. China refuses to submit th« question to The Hague Tribunal, and Belgium Is likely to withdraw her recognition of the Peking Government, having the backing of all foreign Powers. China's attitude amounts to flouting the League of Nations. ANTI-CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT. CHINESE CONVERTS TORTUREOe MISSIONARIES LEAVE THEIR POSTS (Received November 9, 11.45 a.m.) PEKING, November 8. Messages from the Interior describe bitter anti-foreign feeling Inland. Trade is at a standstill. Missionaries of all faiths in China are at present working under impossible conditions. The majority are content to maintain thoir personal safety, which Is extremely difficult amid the unprecedented antl-Christlan movement inspired by the Red agents agalnjst foreigners. Churches and cemeteries are desecrated, missions have been made the headquarters of bandits, and special delight Is taken In torturing Christian converts and mocking sacred symbols. Scores of missionaries are quitting their posts, being forced to shift for themselves, as the natives are afraid to render tran»» port or other assistance. REDS IN POSSESSION. GARRISON SURRENDERS. WU PEI-FU'S FORCE IN DIRE STRAITS. (Received November 9, 11.30 a.m,},, PEKING, November 8. Klu-klang is completely In th« possession of the Reds. General Sun Chuan-fang has retreated to his Nanking base. The Reds' success was due to the refusal of the Klu-klang garrison to fight against the Reds, and surrendered. General Feng Yuh-siang's Reds have arrived on the edge of the Honan province, In the rear of General Wp Pei-fu's stronghold. Fierce fighting is proceeding and General Wu Pei-fu is threatened with complete annihilation.
