Works Commltteo's Report.

The chairman and the engineer decided, after inspection, that on the grade down from the angle above the Park gate in Puniu Road in Roche Street, where the metal was high above the sides of the road it would be better to lift the metal and lower the formation than have the new asphalt work cocked up in the air, This has been done, and the excavated material was used to make up the sides in Bank Street, where the laying of the new material has left the sides low. The work of preparing the surface in Rank Street from the monument to near the Waipa County Council office was commenced on February 23. Certain light excavation had to be done here to sweeten the grade in between the old metal at the County office and the new asphalt work done from the monument downwards. This work involved the lifting of the old metal and replacing on the excavated area. The old metal was very thin, and had to be reinforced with three to four inches of 24 -inch metal before the 4-inch bilumenised wearing surface was placed. From the County office, on to Hie angle above (he Park gate the wearing surface has been laid on the old inctal. The width of the old metal being only from 10 to 12 feet, the extra width up to the 15 feet has been obtained by laying a foundation of 2 4-ineh metal of varying thickness along the side. . By 10-morrow night, weather permitting, the bitumonised coat will he laid up as far as the work above, the Park gate, about 20 chains in all. All the main sewer work in the Pakura area has been completed with the exception of some man-holes. The concrete work for the man-holes has been re-cast in the yards, so ihat Ihe m.in-holc work will not take long. Mr Smith has been notified to remove his hedge in Kihikihi Road, as ihc Government lias moved their’s. The Government contractors will finish their work to-day. There is an abundant supply of wafer in the intake, and ihe pressure in iown lias been from 60 to 100 lbs to the square inch all the fortnight- The ITumc Pipe Company is now busy testing the new concrete main to the Mental Hospital in sections bv placing a. small meter at each valve in turn, and thus measuring the water in each section. In (his they are following Ihe Council's example by measuring Ihc waste with a small meter. Tim County engineer asks that the entrance to the Gounly yard from Bank Street shall be asphalted in from the street asphalt lo Ihe gateway, the cost to be charged to the County. It is proposed to do this work when it can he fitted in with Ihc Borough’s own arrangements, q’h ere arc several small jobs of this kind to do; the Fire Brigade entrance, Wallace Street entrance, and Hood dips in Mandcno Street, and at Ihc junction of Raikcs Avenue with Kihikihi Road. Fire Alarms. Captain Haseldcn and Mr G. \V. Mairs waited on the Council in reference to tlie tire alarm which had been sounded in connection with a gorse lire on Mr Mairs’ properly on February 10. Mr Mairs stated that his position had already been explained- He had asked for permission to burn on ids properly, whicli had beer, granted. This permit had been passed on. He had also rung up the captain of the Fire Brigade, ana told him of the position. A few minutes later the firelicil rang out. Permission was given just before 12 o’clock. Captain Haseldcn said Mr Mairs had been quite correct. He watched the lire for some time. He did not know until tic got down to ttie office that Hie fire was still under control. It was about 15 minutes after the Fire Station had been notified before the fiVc-bcll rang. Mr Morris, secretary of the Fire Brigade, said lie had rung the bell. There was no notice on . the notice hoard, and lie had used his own discretion, and he honestly thought he was fully justified. Captain Haseldcn said he was very pleased this inquiry had been held, as it was quite apparent there must lie some alteration in Hie present method of permits, as the Brigade had received no notification officially that a permit had boon issued. The clerk said lie had chalked the notice up, but apparently it had been rubbed out. Of enure, tlie permit was really for lighting fires in the daytime. Mr Mairs stated tlie fire had been lit in t’ue afternoon, though it had been pitt out and re-lit later when there were more there lo look after it. He had not been told ihat it was to be only for fires in the day-time. Cr. McGcchio said it seemed to iiim that Mr Mairs had done all that evas required of him, and even more, and they could not fairly ask him to pay. He moved that fires should only lie permitted In the day-time, and, turthcr, that the account be passed for payment, and tin's was agreed to. Cr .Jeffery moved a vote of thanks lo the members of tlie Fire Brigade for tlieir attendance, as he thought Hie discussion Dial had arisen would lie of service generally lo Ihe ratepayers. This was supported by the Mayor and agreed to. General. The secretary-manager of the Te Awamufu Electric Power Board notified the Council that the trees in Park Road and Arawata Street are becoming a menace to the Board's lines, and require cutting back. He desired lo have this matter attended to at once, and if notified when they were starling lie would send an official along to do what is required to protect their lines and also tlie Council’s employees.—Referred to the Works Committee. The Government Life Insurance Department, Public Trustee, and the A.M.P. Society notified tlac Council Dial liioy were unable lo entertain the Council’s application for a loan of £15,000, being the balance of tlie streets improvement loan. Tlie Council received an application from Mr ,1. P. Goodall, of Hamilton, regarding street rubbish containers. As the application meant advertising matter on the containers, it caused some discussion as to whether this advertising should he allowed in tlie streets; also as to the method to be used for emptying them.—Received.

The Town Clerk of the Morrinsville Borough Council inquired as lo what action the Council was taking with regard to the installation of kerbside petrol pumps; and also what regulations the Council had regarding the installation. —As this Council lias nothing to report, nothing further could ho done yet.

Mr E. ltecd wrote the Council on behalf of the .Presbyterian Bible Class camp, and applied for the sole use of the swimming baths on Caster Monday between 2 p.m. and C> p.m., for which they were prepared to pay ill. The Mayor said that the only point of discussion was relating to season ticket holders. —It was decided to formally close the baths at the end of March, though it would be possible for the public wishing to use them to do so by private arrangements.—-The application was then granted.
