MARCH MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The March meeting of the Piako County Council was held at Te Aroha on Tuesday, Cf. F. W. Wallers presiding. There were also present Crs. W. C. Kennedy, J. Orr, N. Stark, W. R. Lowry, XV. McLean, and L. E. Hughes. Motor Registration. The Bruce County Council forwarded the following remit for consideration and support:—“That on application being made for the registration of a motor vehicle, or the transfer of such registration, the applicant be required to furnish proof to the Registrar or Deputy-Registrar that the owner of the vehicle is covered by a third parly accident insurance policy (for, say, £1000) for the ensuing 12 months.”—Received. Carting Timber. The N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. asked permission lo cart timber from Maukoro estate to Morrinsvillc, on the, conditions that the carters keep off the roads with heavy traffic, loads to tie restricted to 2 tons on four wheels, 3 ions on six wheels, and speed limit to be restricted to 10 or 12 miles per hour, and pay a royalty of 4d per 100 superficial feel of timber delivered. The company is quite prepared to stack all the timber during the winter months. The mill will only out 5000 feel per day at the most, and is only intended as an auxiliary supply. Cr. Stark considered that -id per 100 ft. would not pay them. Mr Walters said that the company had agreed not to run on the roads on certain months of the year. Cr. Lowry” We must safeguard the Morrinsvillc riding. The company must enter into a bond against extraordinary traffic damage. He contended that the timber carting of a million feet will do as much damage as the whole of the ratepayers’ work during the year. Tlie matter was left to the chairman and Cr. Stark lo confer with the Dairy Company and solicitor (Mr Gilchrist). Ragwort. The N.Z. Farmers’ Union, writing in regard to ragwort, said if, was reported at their executive meeting Dial the Matamaia County Council had asked the Agricultural Department to lift ragwort from ti.c second schedule into the first schedule of the Act, so that inspectors could call upon farmers lo eradicate the pest. The union passed a resolution requesting me Waikato, Waipa, Raglan, and Piako County Councils to support the action of the Matamata Council, by each writing direct to the. Agricultural Department and pointing out ttie likelihood of the weed becoming a serious matter, and the need for wider powers io be given lo Ihc Department’s officers io enforce eradication of Ihe pest in Hie interests of Iho farmers and the Slate. The council considered that the Farmers’ Union already possessed full powers to act, in the manner indicated. Quarry Reports. The annual report of the Wairongomai quarry was read. It Showed that the amount of metal produced was valued at £5362 !9s 9d; stores and materials sold, £485 15s 7d; total, £5858 15s id. Less expenditure, £1502 J9s 9d, showing a surplus to credit of £1315 43s 7d. The annual report showed that the total amount, of metal produced at Hinton’s quarry was £4849 13s 6d, less expenses £3802 Ms Id, leaving a profit of £IO4O 19s sd. Deputation. Messrs T. Hickey, D. Cullen, S. Tretheway and W. Comes waited upon Hie Council respecting the metalling of Wairongon.ai-Maungakawa road. Mr Hickey said Hie work was urgent, as during the winter little progress could lie made, and Hie settlers would he greatly inconvenienced. Mr Gibbs, engineer, said that the work would he completed within three weeks. If Hie settlers required the use of the grade,r and carry out Hie grading themselves £3 4s per day would he allowed, al'ler which the Council would metal the road. This the deputation agreed upon. Meeting the Ratepayers.

Air Walters referred to a proposal to hold a general meeting of ratepayers in order to discuss details of county administration before the Councils election, which will be field on May 5. Mr Walters said that the ratepayers are taking a very sensible view of tlieir affairs, and general meetings did a great deal of good to clear the atmosphere. Cr. McLean and the engineer were deputed to meet the Wairere soldier settlers and discuss loan proposals with them. The Te Aroha Cemetery Board asked the Council for a grant towards the upkeep of the Te Aroha cemetery. Their revenue is derived from burials, while the expense connected with the grounds upkeep is very considerable. Council agreed to investigate the position. , ~ _ Mr U. Holiday requested the Council In proceed with the work of a road through lot 13, Maukoro before the winter. —Left to riding member and engineer to act. The llaaraki Plains County Council asked the Council to undertake Ihc work necessary towards prevention of excessive scouring on the MaukoroLanding road. In the event of the Piako Council proceeding with the work the Ilauraki Council is prepared to pay hair the cost.—Left to engineer and riding member to attend to. Mr \V. 11. llaynes, Bell Hoad, drew attention to the condition of the road, half a mile in length, past, his property. Left in hands of engineer and Cr. Lowry. „ . , Mr ,T. A. Mundell wrote that Cussin s road needed repairing very urgently, as no repairs have been made to the road for several months.—Engineer to attend. The Ilungahunga Drainage Board asked Hie Council to contribute towards cleaning Hodge's outlet, which affected the properties of Messrs Hogan, G. Bowen, and 1L Botham, and, besides was a material benefit to the Council.— Left to Cr. Hughes and the engineer to attend to. Mr F. G. Skoal inquired as to when the Council intended to finish Stanley road metalling work of McLaren s road. —Engineer said the work vms progressing. ~ _ The Glaxo Co. requested the Council to proceed with the work of completing the work on the shoulders of ihc concrete work, as present conditions are dangerous. —Council agreed to attend to the work. The AVaitemala Bridge Committee wrote that a proposal was afoot to construct a bridge across the Wnitemata, and it was desired to obtain the views of local bodies on the project. —Received.
