TWO WOMEN SENTENCED

ONE GETS PROBATION* A HAMILTON CASE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. "I propose to allow probation in your case, I have seen Adjutant Gordon, and I think the fact that, you have pleaded guilty to these charges is not a proof that you have a criminal mind," said Mr Justice Reed to Janet Easton, one of two female prisoners who appeared before him this morning, to, receive sentence on charges to which they had pleaded guilty. Easton had admitted four charges „of theft und one of forgery at Hamilton. Some part of the responsibility for prisoner's conduct was due -to the extreme slackness in the management of the office in which prisoner had been employed, said Mr W. T. Hampson, woh represented prisoner. She had handled hundreds .of pounds every week. It was the* manager's duty to make a check weekly, and he had admitted that he had not done so. It had also been admitted that there had been no monthly audit. The auditor further admitted that had the accounts been audited regularly the defalcations could not have occurred. It was the young woman's first offence. She had"done all in her power to facilitate clearing the matter up. In view of her health and the later facts, counsel asked for probation. His Honor granted twelve months' probation, on condition that prisoner remained in a Salvation Army home during that period. Hazel Mary Carswell, a younsr woman, appeared in the dock to receive sentence on two charges of forgery, and two of theft in respect of offences 3t Moi'rinsville. His Honor: Have you anything to say?
