SHODDY FOOTWEAR.
Referring to shoddy footwear, Mr T. F. Richards, president of the National Union of 800 l and Shoe Operatives, in his monthly report, says:^~
"We shall soon have lo consider whether the time is not over-ripe when we should name and advertise those firms we can trust lo be loyal to our national terms, and also give a written guarantee with every pair of boots or shoes sold that they are 01 a certain standard of finality nnd free from adulteration. The Labour Government could help us by making it illegal to cover up or hide' the insole of any boot or shoe, and an industrial Lrihunal should be set up to check adulteration and protect the public from men of a poor type rolling in wealth in ri few years, while operalives who cannot pocket their conscience go mi working day by day, and they and their children are trapped into consumption by wearing shoddy bools, bought as shoddy, and sold as though they were honest goods. 1 '
