DOMINION'S CHIEF NEED.
LOWER PORT DUES.
NOT SPEEDIER STEAMERS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, August 9. The Daily Telegraph, editorially, says the peoples in the dominions in the Pacific, instead of crying out for 20 and 21-knot ships, such as the North Atlantic with its great traffic supports, would be better advised to study the statistics of the Chamber of Shipping regarding port charges and see whether they cannot be reduced to a reasonable level to their own advantage. ■ Their arraignment, if the term is not too strong for friendly criticism, has been made in good time for action before the Economic Conference assembles. The prosperity of the dominions depends mainly on cheapening the carriage of goods, and it is apparent in this respect they can do much to help themselves.
