PAID FOR,

tfAND INSTRUMENTS FREE.

FINAL CHEQUE FORWARDED

After a silence of several months, the Hamilton City Band, formerly known as the Hamilton Municipal Band, again made itself heard, last night, when it gave selections on the instruments recently released from the guarantors, who had impounded them for debt. At 11.30 to-day the final cheque in. liquidation of the debt of £7OO, owing on the instruments, was forwarded by Mr X to. the agents, in Auckland, Messrs A. Eady and Co. . The great effort made by Mr X only goes to prove what can be achieved by a patriotic enthusiasm, for in the space of five short day’s he has accomplished what a whole carnival committee, employing hundreds of workers, failed to do in almost as many months. He has made the band instruments free of debt, and has placed the land itself oh a new footing, leaving them with only £lO3 owing on the uniforms. Contrary to the wishes of Mr X that his name should remain undisclosed, we feel that it Is due to him and to the public generally that he should no lonfeer be allowed to hide the light of his generosity and Initiative behind a nom de plume. Mr X is none other than Mr F. W. Burley, whose benefactions in the past, one way and another, have earned him some notoriety. To Mr Burley the town owes thanks, and the best way the people can show their appreciation of his efforts is to shower In subscriptions so as to lighten, as far as pffssibie, the burden which Mr Burley voluntarily imposed upon himself.
