ALLEGED BURGLARY.
SAFE ROBBED AT WHAREPOA.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. THAMES, Wednesday.
Richard Henry Farrands and Thomas Joseph Leo Meagher were charged before Mr Salmon, S.M., with burglary at the Wharepoa store, owned by one Valentine. The latter left the store on Thursday, March 29, and found the windows broken and the safe removed on Good Friday. The safe was recovered in a quarry at Hikutaia with both doors blown open and £l2 taken. Sergeant McDonnell gave evidence as to finding the safe and arresting accused. Farrands voluntarily made a statement that he drove from Waihi in a trap with a mate to Wharepoa, where they removed the safe, blew it open, took the cash and drove back to Waihi. Meagher also signed a statement of confession. Both accused when arrested were strongly under the influence of liquor, Meagher ))eing on the verge of delirium tremens. The Magistrate committed accused for trial, bail being allowed in accuseds' own recognisance for £2OO and two sureties of £IOO.
