THE EMPIRE NAVY
MR MASSEY'S SPEECH. NEW ZEALAND'S CONTRIBUTION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received October 12, 8.30 p.m. LONDON, October 12Sir James Allen, High Commissioner for New Zealand, interviewed by the Daily Chronicle regarding Mr Masscy's naval speech, stated that the amount of New Zealand's contribution was a matter for the Dominion Parliament. It might be taken 'for granted that New Zealand would do her share, perhaps providing the money to build vessels, as in the case of the warship New Zealand. A leading Admiralty official, in an interview, said that New Zealand may ask to be permitted to contribute to the Pacific defence. It was immaterial if she contributed towards ships in the Pacific or the English Channel; both, were equally important. Referring to Mr Masscy's statement that new ships would be Empire ships, not merely United Kingdom ships, the official points out that the navy has always been a» Empire navy.
