ENGLISH MARKETS,
The Deparment of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated Bth inst., from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Meat. —Market depressed, and fall in mutton and "lamb prices continued, owing to causes mentioned last week, viz.: (1) Large quantity of frozen meat in store and discharging; (2) low price accepted for Argentine meat; (3) holders forced to realise by banks, supplemented by hot weather decreasing demand. Market somcwdiat steadier now than early \this week. Beef, frozen selling slowly; chilled in good supply. N.Z. mutton, lightweight 7d to 7£d, heavy-weight 43d to BJd; N.Z. ewes, 4:]d; N.Z. lamb, light-weight BJd to Did, heavyweight 7Ad to BJd; N.Z. beef, prime ox, hinds Gd, fores 4Jd; chilled beef, hinds 7id, fores 5Jd. Retail prices for chilled beef: Sirloin, 1/3A; ribs, 1/3; rump steak, 1/8.
Butter. —Market very little change, and with continued shortage Home supplies; majority of business doing affects only Danish and Government Colonial stocks. Danish is in fair and .steady demand at 228/- to 230/- per cwl, 2/OA to 2/OJ Per lb. Irish, creamery, salted. 170/- to 184/- per cwt, 1/0J to 1/7J per lb: unsalted, 190/- to 195/- per cwt. 1/8} to 1/9 per lb. Government stocks selling slowly, considerable portion of which shows sicrns of lengthy storage, and buyers waiting new season's arrival. Trade anticipates these will command premium. New Zealand, 205/- to 210/- per cwt, 1/10 to 1/10* per lb; Australian, 180/- to 18• S/- per cwt, 1/7} to l/7 : ; per lb; Australian, free, 155/- to 184/- per cwt, 1/4} to 1/7;? per lb. Cheese.—-Market steadier, with belter demand. English, finest farmers'. 130/- to 140/- per cwt, 1/2 to 1/3 per lb. Canadian, white, 108/- per cwt, llid per lb; coloured, 104/- per cwt, lid per lb. New Zealand, white. 102/- to 104/--per cwt, IOJd to lid per lb; coloured, 91/- to 96/- per cwt, lOd to lO.ld per lb. Hemp.—Manila market, firm and steady. "J" grade July-September and August-October shipments sold £39 15/-, September-November and Octo-ber-December shipments sold £4O per ton. New Zealand met fair Continental demand early this week, and fair quantity sold by second-hand holders on the basis of: High points, OctoberDecember and January-March shipments, £3B 10/- to £39: fair, ditto, £3O 10/- to £37 per lon. Demand eased off later, and quotations now about 5/- per ton lower. Shippers not offering, asking higher price. Spot value high points about £42 10/-, fair £3B per ton. Wool. —Bradford lone firm, Antwerp sales having confirmed upward movement ■ London-Liverpool sales. Offerings at next, London series, commencing II Hi October, will be 150,000 bales, of which 72;000 bales 8.A.W.8.A. and 78,(100 bales privately owned
