ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

An endeavour is being made to resuscitate the Hamilton branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, that body of honorary servants of the public, who for centuries have rendered such excellent service to humanity and who arc to be seen at most public assemblies ready with bandage and splint to relieve suffering and save life. With the idea of stimulating interest in tiie worth of the association, a visit was paid to the town yesterday by Mr William Rattray, Honorary Serving Brother of the Order of SI. John and Hon. Secretary of the Auckland centre of the association; and Mr Claude W. Gooderhani, superintendent of the Auckland division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Both men spoke at a public meeting at Toorak Chambers, last night, when ihe former gave an interesting history of Hie association and an account of its objects and work, while Hie latter urged a renewed interest in the work in Hamilton. There was at one lime in Hamilton, lie said, a splendid division, but it had fallen low in membership and Ihe work now fell heavily upon Hie few members who were left, Hamilton had now grown into an important town and there was need of a strong body of ambulance workers in Hie district. Mon and women were hoth needed and a class would ho formed in Hamilton whore anyone who desired c old learn to render first aid to Hie injured. Mr Gooderman then gave an interesting display an first aid, demonstrating the treatment of fractures, arli ficial respiration and the arrest of hemorrhage.

During Hie evening, the Mayor (Mr J. H. Fow), who presided, announced that it had been the Intention to present the certificates won by I tie ladies at a recent examination, liui, (he Mayor of Auckland had not had lime to sign them previous to the meeting. Mr Fow. however, presented to Miss Ruth White the medal of Hie association, earned for not less than 1000 hours’ war work. A vote of thanks to hoili speakers and Hie chairman concluded Hie meeting.
