BENEFIT CONCERT

AN EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT. A benefit concert organised by the Frankton Railway Sports and Recreation Club in aid of distressed railwaymen was presented before a full house at the Frankton Town Hall last evening. The eoncert was a long way above the ordinary, and was Ihor--wghly enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Prior to the commencement of the concert Mr .lack rfenz announced that as a resull of tile three benefit concerts already {riven £IBO (had been distributed amongst deserving cases. This figure was exclusive of the proceeds of that night's concert. Mr Denz specially (hanked those artists who had assisted in this and other concerts, stating that the. cause had been helped by practically every artist in the district.

The programme was made up of a number of songs, humorous items, violin solos and dances. Of the singers Miss Cora Melvin, singing in beautiful voice. was heard lo marked advantage in "I Hear the Thrush at F.ve." "Sing, Joyous Bird." "1 Wonder if Love is a Dream." "\nnie Laurie." Miss Ivy Hoddcr sang verv nicelv "My Task," "Love's Fleeting' Hours." arid others. Mr Harold Piper pleased immensely in "Mandalay." "Stone Smasher John," "Floral Hance." and "Rolling Down to Rio." Violin solos—Chanson Polonaise (Wienawski), Cegende (Wienawski), and nihors — W ere capably rendered by Mr .1. Carter. Scotty Bolton proved very" entortainins with his humorous items. Comie numbers were also contributed by Messrs Reg. Cooke and P. W. Maddock, and.in additkfi, skilful dancing by Miss Gladys Denz, entertaining .recitations bv Miss Cwladys Major, and funny songs by Mr J. Rrabner, completed an excellent' programme. Messrs Harold Piper and A. Lindsay Mitchell gave entire satisfaction as accompanists. Such a concert as Ihis, at which the best of enjoyment, may be secured, together with'the satisfaction of knowin? that one is helping in a noble cause, must always prove welcome, and it is fo be hoped that many more will be held.
