NEW CONTRACT EXPLAINED.

lion. E. P. 1,00, Minister for Commerce, in a statement to the House regarding sugar, told members that the Government had renewed its contract, will] the Colonial Sugar Co., for the purchase of raw sugar at Fiji, and for refining it at Hie company's Auckland works. The prices of raw sugar had been reduced from £35 10s per ton to £22 12s Gd per lon. and the price to consumers would be reduced to -i. : ;U per 1!)., from November 7. The Minister vinphasiscd that this was a lower price than any other country was paying for high grade sugar. Australia's lowest price would be 6d until June.3o next. He thought there was no danger of a shortage in future.
