CONDITIONS IN THE STATES

LABOUR OUTLOOK GLOOMY. SLIGHT MONETARY IMPROVEMENT N.Z. BUTTER'S REPUTATION. In a letter dated from New York, Mr W. Goodfellow, managing-director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, remarks that in the States *■• the Company's Anchor Brand butter has quite a good reputation, and is well-known to the larger buyers. Referring lo general conditions in the States, he says the railway returns show an improvement, and the general tone is slightly more optimistic, though so far as unemployment is concerned — and there are 6,000,000 unemployed in the States —things look very blue for the coming winter unless manufacturing increases and some of the surplus labour is thus employed. In a further letter from Montreal, Mr Goodfellow states that money is very tight everywhere, arid financing difficult in both Canada and the United States. Bankers informed him, however, that there were already signs of improved monetary conditions, although they anticipated it would be years before trade and commerce would be anything like normal.
