Union officials, who have been consulted on the general strike suggestion, describe it as madness, as it won Id inevitably prove a failure. Slate Ministers are not perturbed, believing the proposal to be '.'hot air' nn behalf of the extremists who are effectively separated from most of the positions of authority in the Labour movement. The Labour Council has adopted a report of the Melbourne Conference, and decided to form twelve industrial groups along the lines suggested. VICTORIAN SHIPPING DISPUTE. SETTLEMENT IMMINENT. (United Press Association.) Received February 25, 10 a.m. ' MELBOURNE, February 25. There seems little doubt that a shipping settlement will he reached to-day, (he probable terms being that all the ships, excepting the seven j steamers which previously carried 27 i men, and over which the dispute arose, j will be manned forthwith. A tribunal is to sit immediately to decide whether j 27 men should be carried or not. Also | absolute guarantees are to be given that "job control" will be abolished, j continuity of work guaranteed, and the j arbitration awards and agreements j will be slriclly observed by both parties. ■, - U S.S. STEAMERS HELD UP. THROUGH WATERSIDE TROUBLE. NO STEAMERS FROM SYDNEY. (United Press Association.) Received February 25, 10 Im. , SYDNEY, February 25. In consequence of the dispute between* the shipowners and waterside workers in N''\v Zealand, the Union Company's steamers are held up. The Tofua's crew lias been paid off. There will be no steamers for Auckland next week. • {
