The Te Anau, which was timed to leave Lyttelton for Napier and Gisborne last night, did not get away owing to an outbreak of fire. before the intended time of departure. one of the engineers, whilst inspecting and oiling the tail shaft, noticed an unusual heat. He immediately informed Captain Platts, who decided to discharge the cargo. The Union Company's permanent hande cte put on; (.and unloaded a quantity of produce, and a small fire was located in No. 4 hold. A box of wax matches,; was found in the bottom of the hold, also a ■number of unignited matches lying 'about. It is thought that the box had been gnawed by rats, causing the contents to ignite, and setting fire to bags of oats.
