TIMBER MILL DESTROYED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday.* A fire destroyed the Cashmere timber mills at Cox’s Creek at one o’clock. In the absence of a water supply the flames speedily enveloped the main buildings and machinery, making a brilliant spectacle for many miles. WATERSIDERS’ DEMANDS. The Conference decided to ask a flat rate increase on the existing rates at all ports of 6d per hour on all classes of work, and treble overtime for Sundays, Christmas Day, and Good Fridav, with double rates for all overtime between 8 a.m; and .5 and treble rate thereafter, and when men work part of an hour a full hour to be paid for. Henry Leonard Bradling, f Ox the “B” railway goods shed, ChnsL church, was sentenced to three months imprisonment by Mr McCarthy, S.M., this morning for the theft quantities of iron and timber. Evidence was given that the iron was taken from the goods shed by a carter to the accused s place, and that timber also was stolen. Accused gave the police, a contradictory account of hil possession. denied committing the theft, but offered no evidence, and the Magistrate said that Moused had committed a breach of trust, setting a bad example to the men under his charge. The ease I'cciuircd more than a fine, and so he in dieted a sentence of three months. Accused, on leaving the Court, again protested his innocence, and announced his intention to appeal.
