THE IRISH SITUATION
POLITICAL UNREST UNABATED. COUNTRY MUST BE FREED. FROM TERRORISTS AND ASSASSINS. SELF-DETERMINATION IMPOSSIBLE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received April 5. 1.10 a'.rn. LONDON, April 4. Mr J. lan MacPlierson, Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant, speaking in the House of Commons, said that the political unrest in Ireland was unabated and was accompanied by the cruellest outrages. He was determined to support the constabulary and military in protecting law-abiding citizens against terrorists and assassins, from whom one of the most prosperous countries in the world must be freed. Sinn Feinism menaced its progress, alienated sympathy, produced and maintained a deadlock, and stifled industries and social development. The application of self-determination would mean the establishment of a Sinn Fein republic in its rankest form. The present conditions prevented the Government exploring all practical paths in order to secure a generous settlement of problems, which were never more pressing.
