ONE OF NEW ZEALAND'S HEROES A MESSAGE FROM THE KING.

When it became known this morning that Private Thomas K. Davies. son of .Mr and Mrs E. Davies, of Claudelands. was returning home to-day, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, decided that it was only fitting that he should V publicly welcomed, and in consequence of a notice 1o the effect on our board a large gathering assembled in front of our ofliee at one o'clock. Private Davies, who left with tlv 1 Eighth Reinforcements, has lost both legs above the knee, the result of a German bomb, hut he is now able to walk with the aid of artificial limbs. Mr Fow, in welcoming Private Davies, said his cheerful optimism ha I been a great encouragement to other patients, anil hearing of this case, lbs Majesty bad invited him to Buckingham Palace where he spent the diw Prior to bis leaving, His Majesty gave him this message: "Tell my people of New Zealand that your bright cheerfulness and unfailing spirits have been an inspiration to the many other sufferers in the hospital, and we are proud of a country that can produce such heroes."' Private Davies was only ene of those heroes who were a credit to themselves, a glory to their own country, and a pride to the Empire, tin his Worship's call, hearty cheers w--re given for Private Davies and his parents. Rev. E. 0. Blamires also addressed a few words of welcome and Private Davies was soon surrounded by many friends glad to welcome him home again.
