DIAMOND WEDDING
MR AND MRS T CHAPPELL.
Mr and Mrs T. Chappell, of Grey street, Hamilton, are to-day celebrating their diamond wedding. They were married at Buckingham, England, on October 21, 1858. Arriving in New Zealand about 35 years ago, they came to Hamilton straight away, and have been here ever since. During their residence here they have seen the town grow from what was practically only a village, with half-a-dozen shops in the main street, to what it is to-day—one of the most prosperous inland towns in New Zealand. The outside district, too, has grown tremendously, and what was previously bush and swamp country has now been brought into cultivation.
Mr and Mrs Channell have a grownup family of four—Mr Albert Channel!, of Auckland, Mrs Mellor, of Grevmouth, and Mrs Stevens and Mrs Tregear, of Petone—who are with them t*>day. There are 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The happy couple, after a lifetime together, are now 79 years of age, their birthdays l»eing within a week of each other's, and are still hale and hearty, with the exception that Mr Chappell is a little deaf.
They have proved themselves the right type of settler, and have earned the respect and esteem of the whole community, who will join heartily in felicitating Mr and Mrs Chappell on this auspicious occasion, and wishing them continued health and happiness.
