DOUAI SURROUNDED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received October 15, 8.00 a.m. NEW YORK, October 14. The British have surrounded Douai. HEAVY ENEMY BOMBARDMENT. ON A WIDE FRONT. PRECEDES STRONO INFANTRY ATTACK. REPULSED AFTER STIFF FIGHTING. OTHER ASSAULTS UNSUCCESSFUL. (Australian and N.Z. and Reuter.) Received October 15, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 14, 3.10 a.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that on Sunday afternoon the enemy opened a heavy bombardment on a wide froqt northward of Le Cateau, launching strong infantry attacks on our position eastward of the Sellc river, in the neighbourhood of Solesmes. 1 These attacks were successfully repulsed after stiff fighting. Other attacks, in which tanks were employed in supporting the infantry assault against our positions opposite Haspres, Were unsuccessful. Our patrols advanced at a number of points southward and northward of Douai, and gained ground, taking prisoners.
