LOCAL AND GENERAL.

There will come a time when it shall lie light, and when man shall awaken from his lofty dreams and find his dreams still there and that nothing has gone save his sleep.—Jean Paul. At last evening's gathering of Oddfellows in Hamilton to welcome the Provincial Grand Master, it was pointed out that 3000 members of the Manchester Unity in the Dominion, were serving their country. Of this number 500 belonged to lodges in the Auckland provincial district. On Thursday evening the scholars of St. Andrew's Sunday School, Cambridge, gave a concert in the hall, which was a great success, the building being crowded to overflowing. We have not space to mention the performers, but suffice it to say they all did splendidly, and reflected great credit upon the Misses G. Brooks and E. Souter who trained them; and Mrs Heslop kindly played the accompaniments. A goodly sum was raised, and it will go to swell the church funds. Remembering the loyalty of India in the present crisis ,and the valour of the Sikhs, the Gurkhas and the Dogras in the fierce fighting, the lecture on Monday at St. Andrew's Church, Hamilton, is likely to be of great interest. The lecturer, Rev. E. Palgrave Davy, has spent many year.s in India, and for a considerable time was a. near neighbour of the late Earl Kitchener at Simla, in the Himalaya mountains. The chair will be taken by Mr C. L. MacDiarmid at 7.30. A collection will be taken at the close. When an application for permission to erect a sign board Bft 6in above the footpath in front of certain premises in Victoria street, came before the Hamilton Borough Council night, Cr Howden remarked that he thought the Council should consider the whole question of sign Iwards. They were being hung lower and lower year by year, and, besides, being unsightly, they were unfair to certain of the property-owners, while they also constituted a danger should they fall. A committee will go into the whole question. One of the questions that will probably be introduced .to the Minister of Public Works (Hon. W. Eraser) when he is in the Waikato next week, will be in connection with establishing some form of local government for West Taupo. The Kakepuku branch of the Farmers' Union has been interesting itself in this matter, and purposes holding a meeting shortly, with the object of discussing the proposals and formulating some system that will satisfactorily meet the needs of a now very neglected area in the matter of Public Works administration. A clause was included in the "Washing-up Act" of last session, giving power for the establishment of separate road districts in such localities as may be possible, and where this form of local government can be satisfactorily conducted. During the war, while the cost of living and other commodities are so high, the special war discount of 3d back in every 5 s spent for cash given by Messrs Hooker and Kingston, Ltd., is becoming popular throughout the Waikato district. Everyone benefits, the small as well as the large purchaser, whilst the firm's already keen prices will always bear comparison with any store in the Dominion. This is on account of buying in the best' markets, and supplying direct from manufacturer to you. Pretty Japanese Kimona crepe wrappers are showing this week at Hooker and Kingston's in sky, saxe, shell pink, and French grey in both plain and pretty floral patterns, priced to give you the best value always, 7s 6d each.*

The total value of the war loan certificates issued now exceeds £700,008.

'lhe price of hogs in Chicago has reached idols. 40 cents the hundred pounds, which i s a record. A .Melbourne cable states tliat deatiis from cerebrospinal meningitis for the year ended June 30 totalled 480, of which 113 occurred in the June quarter. A Maori, named Kuu Taia, aged 22, was killed at Manawahe, near Lake Roteliu, by a tailing tree, while hushfelling. A Rotorua press message states that McLean, who escaped troni custody, lias been committed for trial at the Supreme Court } Hamilton. At the Supreme Court, Auckland, Norman Selwyit Conolly, charged with attempted rape, was sentenced to three years' hard labour, and one year's hard labour lor breaking his probation conditions.

A young man who ran amok with an axe at Hamilton East yesterday, and was arrested by the police on a charge of malicious damage to property, was this morning certified insane, and committed to Avondale. The Weather Bureau wires.—The indications are for moderate to strong southerly vincls, with a westerly tendency. The weather will probably be cool and changeable and the night very cold. The barometer is unsteady. '"Call at a post-office" is good advice to any man of military age who has not a clear understanding of his duty under the Military Service Act. An official at the post-office will give good guidance lo any lleservist who is in doubt about his obligation in any matter.

Yesterday two employees of the Cambridge Domain Board were clearing the banks of Lake To Koutu of noxious weeds, etc., when they were somewhat startled to hear the "ping" of small bullets striking the vegetation close to where they were working. On investigating matters they found a couple of young men in the reeds at the eastern end of the lake, trying to shoot the

ducks with a pea rifle. As soon a : s they saw (hey were discovered they dropped the rifle and bolted, hut the telephone proved their undoing, for Constable Cleary was quickly on their track, and he eventually "ran them to earth" in a tent at the back of the Carlton boarding house, where they had been staying. They will probably apear at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday next, before Air E. Rawson, S.M., and they will then learii what is the cost of shooting or trying to shoot wildfowl in a sanctuary.
