Te Akatea Tramway.

RAGLAN COUNTY'S POSITION

WHO IS THE STUMBLING BLOCK ?

A large amount of correspondence concerning matters iry ■•connect(ion with the Te Akatea tramway came before the Raglan County Council yesterday.

The clerk, in explaining the Council's position! in the matter, said that while in Wellington recently the chairman himself waited on the managing (director of the company, when thiey !held a long consultation, and the Council was thanked for the assistance it had rendered in endeavoring. to bring matters to a head and to enable the tramway to be commenced without unnecessary obstruction.

The great stumbling block, said Mr Mar eland, was that the Ngfaruawahia Town Board had not been consuited -to any extent [by the: Waipa County Council. The Board had a read of about 1§ chains, a back road, wilfcbout any [houses, tq which the Board would be only too pleased to have anything done in the way of improvements. The company was prepared to form ths road but the Waipa County Council insisted that it should be metalled. The company refused to do. this, and, h)e thought, rightly so, as they were prepared to form the road, lay their rails in the centre and to fence tihe rails off where necessary. The chairman, Cr. Johnstone, said he did not see why the people of the district should be asked to subscribe £IOOO to be thrown into the mud, as the road would never need to be metalled.

Cr. Seavil did not see why the Waipa Council should not carry out the a.grePTrnent as s»t out originally by the Ngaruawahria Town Board. A little further discussion ensued, after which the matter dropped.
