SMELTING WORKS EXPLOSION.
WORKMAN' SHEROIC DEED. PERTH, Januaiy 8. A sensational occurrence is reported from Ravensthorpe, where two explosions occurred in the smelting works The first blew away a few pieces of piping* and also caused an explosion in another part of the works. The men working in the vicinity made a rush to get away. One named Townshend, remained, however, and Bhnt off the water, recognising the extreme danger of the water reaching i the inside of the furnace. This gallant deed probably saved the whole of the works from being blown to pieces by the enormous force of the explosion which must have re. mlted had the cold water reached the furnace. The property was seriously / damaged, bat no one was injured.
