A WELLINGTON DEADLOCK. (I3y Telegraph—Press Association.) W ELLINGTON, this day. A strike of navvies engaged c% Allan Macguire's tramway tunnel coutvact through Mount Victoria took place yesterday. The cause of the trouble was the contractor's in: sistance that the shift bosses on underground work should do the timbering themselves. The men declined and about l."> left work. Subsequently the discontents agreed to resume work on conditions that the timber men get lUs a day, that i lie men be reinstated, that the miners get !»s it day and the number of houj's a week be -ki. The only point in dispute as between what the men ask and that Mr Maguire is prepared Lo concede is the reinstatement qf flie timbering men who struck work, f 1 his lie absolutely declines to concede though he is quite prepared to take 011 the discontented men on his own terms. The necessary men required to complete the work can be obtained locally and from Auckland and the West Coast.
