WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the. Waipa County Council was held at ths Council Chambers, Ohaupo, on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. • There were present: Crs. J. B. Teasdale (chairman), E. Allen, A. Smith, W. Fawkes, W. Mandeno, John Atkinson, H. Kusabs. G. Finch and- F. J. Vickers. Mr A. Armstrong, County Engineer, was also in attendance. Report.—ln his monthly report the Engineer stated that the tender of M'cNaul Bros, had been accepted for reforming a portion of the Mill road in the Mangapiko Outlying District; that of R. Waite, at 9d per cubic yard, for claying on the Whatawhata Swamp Road, and that of W. Bearsley for work on the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Road, at 7s per chain. The works let at the last meeoing, on Bell's and il.e Frontier roads, were finished during the month. In company with Crs. Allen and Teasdale he inspected the various lots at Cambridge West, selecting two as suitable for gravel purposes. The approaches to Cowley's Gully bridge are in a bad state and require re-surfaoing and should be coated with gravel, and the approaches to Mystery Creek, which are almost as bad, require rep tiring.—The action of the deputed Councillors and Engineer in accepting the various tenders as above was confirmed. The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for the works at Cowley's Gully, and to employ the surfaceman at Mystery Creek. Payments,—The following accounts were passed for payment:—Audit fees, £2; W. McCutcheon, £9 3s; M. Fitzgerald, £2lss; J. Charleston. £1 4s; C. Frodslnm, £1 15s; R. Waite, £2O Is.; R. Carter, 14s; G. Smith, £3 3s; W. H. Mandeno, £3 3s; W. Fawkes, £3 3s; F. J. Vickers, £3 3s; Ji Ryburn, '£ls.—The Clerk reported that the bank overdraft, before paying these accounts, stood at £llOO.

Valuation.-Cr. Allen moved that Mr Jas. Ryburn, be appointed as the proper person'to issue the Valuation notices in accordance with the Rating Apt, 1894. 'Seconded by Cr. Fawkes and carried; GBAVEti.—Cr: Allen reported that the Agent of the Council had purchased two acres in Cambridge West, as .gravel Veserves, the total cost being £l7 18s 3d. . RoLL.-rThe; Agent for the. New Zea■land*Loan,and Mercantile Agency Company, wrote asking to have the name of Constable Wm. Jones on the county roll as owner of sections 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57, 58, 59, in the town of Alexandra ftast, the Company having sold the same to him.—The Clerk was instructed to make the usual alteration. Bridge.—A petition was received from asking the; Council to consider the inconvenience caused to a large number of the petitioners by the closing of the bridge leading from Innisfalleu, to Paterangi, and as they considered that 'tile cost of eithp.r repairing or reconstructing the bridge would not be very ■ heavy, they, requested the Council to grant such relief as seems best.—Cr. Finch said there was ho. doubt the bridge was. a necessity ,bu.t the\previons estimate for the repair of the bridge was too high, to allow of the work being undertaken. With Or. Smith he thought the bridge might be roughly repaired at a small cost.—The Chairman said there were settlers much irloie inconvenienced than the settlers i in this district. The distance round was not much further.-Cr. Finch moved that the engineer prepare a rough estimate for a bridge at as low a price as possible consistent with safety.—Seconded by Cr. Smith. Cr. Mandeno moved as. an amendment that owing to the state of the funds the work be held over.-Seconded by Or. Allen.—The amundmeut on being put i was lost and the original motion carried by 5 to 4.. . Assessment.— The Land and Income Tax Department wrote in reply to tho request for the Government to pay one half the cost of tho pending assessaient that .the Minister is unable to hold out bi\y hope whatever of pecuniary assistance be)ng afforded to local bodies-towards the .purpose in question. Genkrous.—The Ngaruawahia Town Bo.ird wrote stating that they are willinL' to keep the road through the townshio in repair if the Waipa Council will hand over-half tho rates collected by them there, —it was thought that the Town Board, who receive £BO in publicans' license fees, should assist the Council to keep the main roads a» is done in other townships, aud the clerk was instructed to reply to this effect. Absentees,—Cr. Finch pointed out the necessity of urging the Public Trustee to take some steps with regard to the unclaimed lauds placed in his hands in June, lSfi3, Norton Road.—ln accordance with the recommendation of Cr. Atkinson, it was decided to send two drays on to this road for a couple of days, the gravelling asked for to stand over. Finch aud carried unanimously.—Civ Mandeno then moved that the chairman and Crs. Allen, Atkinson and the mover be a committee to assist the clerk in arranging the allocation and bring up a report to the Council.—Seconded by Or. Kusabs and carried. Tenders.—The following tenders were dealt with: —Gravelling on the Ruknhia Station Road : R. Waite, 15s per chain; T. Jones, 16s per chain; C. Crouch, 16s per chain ; T. Cowley, 29s per chain ; D. Hall, 12s 6d per chain (accepted) Gravelling on the Narrows Road near MrGribble's: R. Waite, 9s per chain ; T. Jones, lis per chain ; D. Hall, 9s 9d per chain; T. G. Dromgool, 6s lid per chain (accepted); C Crouch, 13s 6d per chain ; T. Cowley, 13s 9d per chain. Dog Case.—Cr. Smith moved that the Council pay the expenses in connection with the dog case, Bettley v, Drnry.— Seconded by Cr. Atkinson.—Cr. Mandeno said that lie was not sure whether the Council could legally pay this money. Ee said, as far as he knew, Mr Drury was very obliging to .ratepayers.—The motion was then put and carried.
