(BV TELKGBAPH.—PKhSSS ASSOCIATION). STRATFORD, Last Night. The chairman of tliu Stratford Town Board has called a public meeting to obtain evidence) in suppoit of this Ktiiitf-ird route. Tho Vigilance Committee is holding a meeting, and intend to press for time to obtain evidence and a foil investigation of the Stratford route.

PALMERSTONNORTH, Last Xight. On Saturday night a cash.box, containing £33 10s in notes, gold and silver, and also cheques and valuable papers representing above £2000 was stolen fr .in the bed-room of Mr G. Howe, a local hotel proprietor. He made up his accounts as usual, and planted the ca-h-box under his bed, and went down stairs till a quarter past twelve, when he went to bed. His room looked all right, but in the morning be found the cash-box gone. It was evidently taken a short time it was placed under the bed, and while Howe was down stairs. The cash-box was found yesterday in a paddock near the Boundary Road, the money being taken, but the papers were left inside. Tho theft is believed to be the work uf a speller.

OHRISTCHURCH, Last Night, At a sale of racehorses to-day, Merrie Kngland was bought by Mr D. Musgrave for L'OO guineas, the steeplechaser Morok was withdrawn at ~>r, guineas, and Springston, the winner of the Great Northern Handicap in ISSS, changed hands at 'J guineas. A meeting of the Bootmaker.-,' Federal Council on Saturday evening agreed to the date fixed fur the Conference in Wellington -viz., the IJIIIi September. Resolutions were also passed, deeply regretting the attitude of Sir George Grey in harassing and obstructing the Liberal wea-mies brought forward by the present Government, and they considered his conduct inconsistent with his previous expressions.

PICTOX, Last Night. The members of Parliament who are visiting here were entertained on Satniday, Speaking to a toast, the Hon. Mr Cairoll said that the tune had arrived when the Maories and Europeans should bo placed on the same footing, and he hoped the separata representation of his race in Parliament would be a short one. Mr Richardson alluded to (he very impoitaut speech of Mr Carroll on native matters, and thought it a pity it could not appear in Hansard. He was thoroughly in accord with Mr Cairolls views that the natives and Europeans .should lie on the same footing as one race. The Hinenioa with the members has gone on to Nelson.
