TEN MILES AN HOUR.

Some little excitement was caused in Hamilton on Saturday in consequence of a stranger giving his namo as " Deerfoot " undertaking to run ten miles in less than an hour. The event took place on Sydney Square, and about 100 people rolled up to witness it. Deerfoot elected to run round a circle of 110 yards in ciicumference, and at the time appointed—half-past four o'clock—time-keepers, etc., were appointed, and the runner started. During the first half-hour he Kin 4.j miles, and when the three-quarters had elapsed he had reached the seventh mile, but when time was called he had barely accomplished the ninth mile ; at the conclusion of which the spectator-! (fill'.' him three cheers. lVfore Deerfoot started to run he, made a speech, in which ho said he had only recently arrived from Sydney, and had come out that afternoon just to let the public of Hamilton see what could be done in the shape of running "free of charge," hut it turned out to be, as the Irishman said, "Free singing for nine-pence," as he took round the "hat " afterwards, anil most of. tlmta present patronised him liberally, as they considered—notwithstanding that he failed to accomplish what he undertook to — he had done remarkably well.
