THE NEW TAXATION.
A petition has been presented by Mr Lake, member for Waikato, from the chairman of the Waikato County Council, on behalf of tho Council. Tho petition sets forth that under the provision-; of the Land and Income Tax*, si:2h of them are merely nominal owners of land, subject to mortgage, are t.'xed not only upon their interest in such land, but a'so upon the moneylender*;' interest therein, which is frequently twice a* <?reat theirs, whereby they (the petit oners) are taxed not only opon tho property they possess, but also upon property they do not posse a s—nain«ly, their and thus they are in tfon.e cases subjected to such an intolerable burden of taxation as practically amounts to the confiscation or their property.
