EMBEZZLEMENT OF COUNTY FUNDS.

Auckland, List Night. The Police Court was occupied during the whole of this morning hearinf, the evidence in the charges preferred against Charles Tuck for alleged embezzlement of the funds of the Piako County Council. Mr C. Buddie appeared on behalf of the Audit Department Mr Hesketh, who defended the accused, asked tb.it he might be dealt with summarily, but Dr. Giles said ha could not do tliii, seeing that there were defnlcatirns to the amount of £140. Evidence was given as to the good character of the accused, which showed that Tuck was a man of undoubted honesty previous to the present charges being discovered against him. The accused was committed to tnko his trial at the next criminal sittings of the Supreme Court on all of the five charges preferred ngniiiil him. B»il was granted.
