TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE Aroha, Monday.
Monday. The magnificent weather and the expectation of witnessing an exciting horse race, drew to the course on Saturday' afternoon a large assemblage of people. The event to be decided was a match for £00 (two miles) between Mr T. Tierney's horse Auctioneer, Mr G. Graves' Catchem, and Mr D. Frazers Tiu Tacks, the owners having each backed their horses to the amount of £20. Considerable interest had been taken in the event for some time previously, and opinion was pretty evenly divided regarding the merits of the steeds, each of which had its supporters, but Auctioneer and Tin Tacks were perhaps held in most favour. The horses got away to an excellent start, and kept well together for a time, but Auctioneer soon assumed the leading position, and maintained it throughout, closely followed by Catchem, who struggled gamely but ineffectually to take first place. Tin Tackn disappointed his admirers, as after the first round he was nowhere in the race. While excavating in the domain l»st week for a new bath, a little above the No 2, the workmen tapped a fresh spring of water some depth below the surface, and tbt existence of which had not previously been surmised. This discovery Is a very valuable ono, at the flow of water is stronger than from any other spring in the reserve, and the temperature also is high, being about 138* Fabr. The excavation was intended for a bath eight feet by six, bat with the increased supply it will now be much enlarged, and a bath more than double that size will be constructed. The contractor )im commenced the now
building over the No. 2, but the work going on will not interfere with the une of tlio bath, nt n temporary covering lias been put up, so that person! preferring that spring to tho others may not be debarred fioin using it. Work at the mines remainn at a standstill, the supply of water at the battery being again as low mi it was before the last rain. The weather rontinue* dry and hut, and yesterday was nbout the wannest experienced here tliw Kenion.
