Prior to the departure of Mr J. Shepherd!, station in aster, from Nightcaps, a few friends from the Railway Department, also members of the stall and some of the business people, met together in Mr Todd’s office, on Saturday evening, and presented Mr Shepherd wTfli a token of appreciation in the form of a case of Do ewe pipes. Mr T. Todd, was in the chair, and several complimentary speeches Were made, eulogising the good qualities of the guest of the evening. All testified to the reliability of the departing officer and his ability in training those under his charge. Those who had been cadets in his office knew his worth as a disciplinarian. He was strictly just in dealing with the. public, and, although behind a difficult task when lie first came to the station in dealing with a spoiled public, before bis departure he had gained the, confidence and esteem of those with whom he came in contact. Mr Shepherd suitably replied, thanking the friends for their kind words, and for their token of appreciation. Mr Turnbull, tbe newly-appointed, stationmaster, was present, and he received m Imafty welcome to the district.
