WAR AGAINST EELS

UPPER HUTT CAMPAIGN REQUEST MADE FOR SUBSIDY One of the outstanding efforts of the Wellington Anglers’ Club, it advised in a letter to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society recently, was the war against eels. The campaign had been carried out by the Upper Hutt sub-committee of the club, the letter continued. Hundreds of eels had been destroyed during the past season. A cup [presented by the president of the club, Mr R. H. Nimmo, for the longest eel caught had been won by Mr Harris, of Akatarawa, who killed an eel weighing 28Jlbs. As Mr Harris was a relief worker and as the cup could only be held by him for a year, the club suggested that in recognition of the valuable work done by him. the society should grant him a free fishing license for the 1935-36 season. The Upper Hutt sub-committee was so enthusiastic over the success achieved last year that it had submitted a proposal to the club t.o wage a more effective war against eels by offering one penny each for all eel heads produced to appointed officers. The club suggested that the society make a grant toward the campaign. The club intended tn spend £2O on eels subsidy next season. The letter was referred to the finance committee. 5
