Slavery in Abyssinia

Statements made recently by Mr E. Valenta. a Czecho-Slovakian photographer, that slaves in Abyssinia were branded and also that the white man was made a target for .abuse, were contradicted by Mr R. Annan, a missionary returned from Abyssinia, in an address at the Y.MtC.A. in Christchurch recently. Mr Annan said that during a residence of several years in Abyssinia he had seen nothing of slaves being branded and had not heard of a single slave being sold. Trade in slaves was now illegal an 1 though there were 2.000.000 slaves in Abyssinia, in 1930. the number was being reduced. White people who understood the Abyssinians' languages and customs and treated them well received courteous treatment in return. He and other missionaries had enjoyed every minute of thleir stay there.
