DEBATING SOCIETY

MEETING AT HATUMA

INTERESTING DISCUSSION*

“That the discovery of America is to be deplored,” was the title of the debate held by the Hatuma Debating Society at their fortnightly meeting in the local hall. There was a good attendance of the public, and Mr C. Edgecombe was in the chair. The affirmative side was taken by Messrs P. Bird (leader), A. Shaw and

S. Thomsen, and the negative by

Messrs R. Thomsen (leader), W. Matthews and A. Ferguson.

When the vote was put to the audience after a very spirited and often humorous debate and discussion, it was found that the affirmative side had won by a substantial majority. Two prepared speeches were delivered during the evening, and these were of a very high order, and proved that both speakers had spent considerable time and thought on their subjects. Mr C. C. Bradshaw spoke on “Ferment in France,” and Mr A. Shaw on “Abyssinia.”

At the next meeting on August 29 a jnock parliament will be held, when the bill, “That the pampering of the younger generation must cease,” will be brought forward. Mr G'. Edgecombe will move the motion and he will be seconded by Mr R. Grant.
